Eugene Layne
15 March 1938 - 28 January 2011
Mr. Layne passed away unexpectedly on Friday night 28 January 2011 in the Newcastle Private Hospital South Africa after an operation.
Wade Eugene Layne was born on 15 March 1938 in Brownwood Texas USA. After his studies he sailed around the world twice on cargo ships and visited and worked, mostly teaching, in various countries. For the past 50 years he was a teacher extraordinaire.
He came to South Africa in 1961 and taught at Clifton Preparatory School in Durban and then for ten years at Michaelhouse where he taught English, Latin and History. For ten years he worked as English Advisor and Senior Lecturer at the Gazankulu Education Department. During that time he founded Khanyisa Preparatory School and Khanysia College, the first English medium, non-racial independent school in the then Northern Province.
In 2001 he joined the Inkamana Community and worked at Inkamana High School where he was the librarian and taught History and English until his death. It was divine providence that brought Eugene to us and made him use his manifold talents for the benefit of Inkamana High School. Eugene will be deeply missed by all those whose lives he touched. We will miss his joy for life, good food and good books. His wisdom, his sense of humor, his formidable knowledge and interest in the world around us will stay with us forever.
On Friday 4 February 2011 he was laid to rest at Inkamana - under the African sun which he loved. We thank God for having brought Eugene into our lives, for allowing us to get to know him and to enjoy the gifts and talents which he had received in so rich a measure from God.
